Side Trip Highlights

I traveled by train on my side trip, which was quite an experience! Trains are a popular form of transportation in India, and it is very easy to use them.

The trip was overnight, so we booked first class in a sleeper car. First class in India is a lot different than first class in the US, and a lot less expensive. There were four beds in the car, so we shared the space with strangers. On the way there, that was a bit unsettling for me. But, by the trip home, I had let go of my discomfort. All bets are off during travel, right? LOL!

I visited a couple of temples on my side trip. One was a Hanuman temple, and Hanuman (the monkey God) is sleeping. I've never seen a sleeping Hanuman before - it was really cool!

I also visited another jyotirlingam - that makes three for me so far. Only nine more to go!

The highlight of my side trip was visiting a friend's school for Brahmin priests. I had no idea what an accomplished scholar he is! He is one of six priests in the whole country to have completed the level of study that he has. He runs an independent school to teach mantras to priests in training. That is noteworthy, because most of the schools that train priests are run by the government.

I was welcomed with a special chant conveying blessings. The students offered me chants, and I offered them chants. That's my idea of a great time! I wanted to bring gifts for the students, and it was suggested to me that I donate something they need for the kitchen as my gift. I chose this mixer, and was so happy to give it to them. They were also happy to receive it.

The school is training Brahmin priests. They need to learn a lot of different mantras and texts to become priests.
